So Good: Motorino

We've been trying to get into Motorino since 2008.
It wins Best Pizza in NYC every year.

Sam Sifton of the NY Times said it was the best pizza in the city, and he knows a little something about food.

We have attempted to get in 3 different times.
On a Saturday night at 7 pm, (are we crazy?), not a chance.
Another time on a summer evening at 8 pm, line around the block.
Next, (I am not lying), a FREEZING January Friday night at 10 pm, still a half hour wait outside in 14F degrees.
Turn around and go somewhere else.

Well, on a recent Sunday night in lower Manhattan, with no intentions of eating pizza at 9:30 pm, we walked by the store front and saw that there was no line, so we had to seize the moment, right?

It didn't matter that we already had a full meal with wine at another establishment, I was going to have that brussels sprouts pizza w/ pancetta if I had to be carried out from too much eating.

I will sum this review up in 2 words. SO GOOD.

The Napoletana pies were the best we have ever had (rivals with Paulie Gees in Brooklyn). The brussels sprouts with pecorino and pancetta pizza was so amazing, moans after each bite. With the fresh fior di latte and just the right amount of burnt bubbles on the edges and that soft middle that is distinctive of Naples style pies.

They have a small menu, meatballs, antipasti and pizza, and a nice small wine list. If you are visiting NYC, make sure this place is on your list, try going for lunch because it's a tough seat to get after 5 pm.

They deserve the title "Best Pizza in NYC". It is worth the wait on the street in any weather.

Haha Stacey, your last comment cracked me up. I have no doubt this place is as difficult to get into as you describe. My sister lives on the lower east side, and now I have yet another reason to show up at her door unannounced. This time, it'll be just in time for lunch! Thanks for sharing!

Have you tried Artichoke on 14th St.?
It;s a little burned, but I love it. The lines have been too long at Motorino on weekends, but I am dying to try it!

How does Motorino stack up against Arturo's in MaplewooD?

Wow, you know I trust your taste. I'm jealous that you live in a place where treasures like this exist and that you can fit in another dinner after the first one. :)

Thanks for weighing in on Arturo's. And the little tutorial on pizza-ology. I'm not eating out and about anyway near the way you do, but I do think I have discriminating taste. And Arturo's, to me, is top notch. Happy you agree.

Put me down for a beeline to Motorino and this pizza. I'll wait in line for this one.
