Good Summer Reads & a Giveaway

Most people take a good novel or best seller to the beach. I take a cookbook.

So what am I reading these hot summer days, you ask?

I am reading these 3 new books & one more is on my list.
They are not only enjoyable to read, but have some great looking recipes, which I plan on trying out soon. Stay tuned.

The first book is from the fantastic Brooklyn restaurant called Frankies Spuntino.
Spuntino means "little snacks" in Italian, or a place you can get a little snack.

I should have named my blog "Stacey's Spuntino".

It's called The Frankies Spuntino Kitchen Companion & Cooking Manual.

There are pretty drawings inside and some very simple homey Italian recipes from the restaurants.

These 2 boyhood pals from Queens, NY (Frank & Frank) have turned a little idea into a big business. They have 3 popular NY restaurants now.

I can't wait to try the cavatelli w/ sausage and brown butter sage.

Book #2 I am enjoying is called Poor Girl Gourmet, written by Rhode Island food blogger Amy McCoy.

Just because you are on a budget, doesn't mean you have to skimp on good food.
I highly recommend this nice book with good photos and recipes.

Book #3 was recommended by Lisa from Delaware (a reader of this blog), and is called Mediterranean Summer, and I am thoroughly enjoying it!

A true story of an American chef hired by a wealthy Italian couple to cook for them on their private yacht.

I love reading it, all the while imagining the beautiful markets of fresh & wonderful produce in Provence and Italy, cruising along the Costa Bella & the Cote d'Azur.

There are great recipes along with a dream trip along the French & Italian Riviera.

Book #4 is due out on August 3.

It is called Georgia's Kitchen, by author Jenny Nelson.

It is a new food fiction novel about a NYC chef who receives a bad restaurant review. Devastated, she goes to Tuscany to sharpen her skills as a restaurateur & cook and leaves her career, fiance and life back home for a new life in Italy. It sounds exciting and anything that involves food, Italy and romance is for me. I can't wait to read it.

The publisher of Georgia's Kitchen is giving two of my readers a copy of this new book, so just leave a comment and tell us what you are reading this summer and on Wednesday the winners will be randomly chosen.....and it doesn't have to be a cookbook!

What are you reading this summer? Inquiring minds want to know.

I borrowed "Victorian Food and Cooking by Andrea Broomfiled" from the library and I liked it so much I bought my own copy. This is an absolutely fascinating
study of how food production and mores changed during the industrial revolution. So much of which impacts us today. A whole chapter on the history of breakfast toast!

I'm reading "The Colony of Unrequited Dreams" by Wayne Johnston and "Fugitive Pieces" by Anne Michaels. I'll also be reading "Ad Hoc At Home" if anyone buys it for me.

It's been so ridiculously hot here in the northeast that my reading "Snow" by Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk is both absurd and perfectly appropriate.

I have read 3 of Jen Lancaster's books this summer. They are all easy reads which I love for the beach. This afternoon I just started Sense & Sensibility. I needed some real reading after so much light reading.

I read cookbooks too but if I really want to escape, I read quality fiction. I read "Tinkers" just before leaving for France and I still can't get it out of my mind. Slim volume, very dense, exquisitely written and profound.
I just finished reading Medium Raw, Bourdain, couldn't put it down! and I'm still working on Recipes from an Italian Summer, simple dishes for informal summer entertaining, makes me want to sell my house and move to Italy!

I'm reading a bunch of stuff.

Donna Hay Magazine, over and over to try to absorb it all.
Miss Dahl's Voluptuous Delights by Sophie Dahl...nice food and pics by the season

Australian Delicious Magazine...best monthly food magazine EVER!

and for some light reading (lol) Race of a Lifetime, the story of the 2008 Presidential election campaign. Gripping, even though you know the ending
The thing is, this has been my Winter reading list as we're feeling the cold here in Australia.

Love your blog Stacey

I do have to admit Stacey, your blog is on my google dashboard and I do look forward to what you post every day. Though I am a sucker for foodie pics so I usually like to look at your pictures first and then go back to read the recipes. This summer I've read some solid books that I'd recommend: Bel Canto by Ann Patchett and Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay. My favorite: The Guernsey LIterary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer--this book made me fall back in love with reading and writing.

I'm a college student, so i mainly only get to read my text books but in between classes right now i'm re-reading Edgar Rice Burroughs, "The Land the Time Forgot". Love your blog Stacy!!!

Jamie
I too love to read Stacey. I'm currently reading an old book, now reprinted with a introduction by Mark Bittman - Beard on Food.

It's James Beard's food columns. No pictures and no need for them either. Just short stores and still appropriate for today, even thought it was originally published way back when.

I've had Mediterranean Summer on my wish list at Amazon for ages. Somehow it's never gotten purchased. Guess I better do something about that!

Great give-away. I would love to read Georgia's Kitchen. Food, Italy and romance what more do you need to make a book exciting? Count me in.

My husband can't quite figure out why I read cookbooks when I'm not in the kitchen! Right now, I'm reading Mark Bittman's Food Matters (again). It's an incredible book - full of mind-numbing facts about how and what Americans eat. It's changed my whole outlook on food and consumption. I highly recommend it.

Keep up the great blog, Stacey. I look forward to it daily!

Hi Stacy-thanks-love your blog. I just finished Some Girls by Jillian Lauren and now reading Blue Shoe by Anne Lamott. I am a rabid reader, especially in summer. I have read so many of the books mentioned here. I, like many other foodies devour cookbooks. Currently reading a gift given to me, In Nonnas Kitchen with a story for each recipe and Maida Heatter's Book of Great Desserts, all while trying all the recipes. Can't wait for Ina's new book out in Oct! Georgia's Kitchen looks great and totally my kind of book.

Poor Girl Gourmet is in my to-read stack right now! I need to get to that already. I'm also reading and enjoying Let the Great World Spin--a great novel about New York. The cookbook I'm reading right now is Cradle of Flavor.

On my night table I have cookbooks to lull me to sleep, amd produce happy dreams.

Right now, when I'm not in bed, I'm reading "Goat Song", a delightful story of an author and hi artist wife, who get fed up with New York and move to Vermont and start raising goats. It is a witty account how they learned everything from breeding, milking and making cheese. There is even a little bit of “goat porn” to make you laugh out loud

“Slow Love – How I Lost My Job, Put On My Pajamas, and Found Happiness” by Dominique Browning
(2010 Atlas& Company)Non-fiction.

For 10 years, Dominique was the Editor-In-Chief of “House and Garden” until CondĂ© Nast ceased publishing the magazine. Dominique was laid off. The book describes her year-long journey of finding herself (and work) again. Message: There is more to life than work becoming your identity. Wonderful read, especially for those who are unemployed.

Also, I love any fiction or mystery books which include recipes (what a surprise!) I love the series by Joanne Fluke (Kensington Publishing Inc) with titles like, “Cherry Cheesecake Murder,” “Key Lime Pie Murder,” “Peach Cobbler Murder” each with a dozen or so recipes tied to the story plot. Is that fun or what???
