BBQ Chicken: Family Recipe

bbq chicken4

This recipe originated somewhere with one of my sisters in law, but not sure which one.

No one has ever made this for me, so I had no idea what they were talking about, when I received a forwarded email from one of them looking thru the family archives for this recipe. There it was, the family secret bbq sauce ending up in my mailbox.

So of course, I had to see what all the fuss was about.

It's a simple marinade/sauce made with a raw egg, oil, vinegar and sage.
Shake it up in a jar and wait about an hour for it to thicken.

I marinated chicken parts on the bone (with skin) for a few hours in the concoction, and then used it as a sauce to baste the chicken while grilling.

The chicken was so moist and tender and had a nice tang to it.
Really simple and delicious.

Now I will share the recipe with you!

Husband's Family BBQ Sauce Recipe:

1/2 cup vegetable oil (I used canola)
1 large egg
1 cup cider vinegar
2 Tbsp dried sage (I actually had dried sage!)
1 tsp kosher salt
1 Tbsp black pepper

Place this mixture in a jar and shake. Keep in the fridge for an hour, it will thicken a little.

It is best used as a basting sauce to brush on the chicken every few minutes while grilling, but I also marinated the chicken in the sauce for extra flavor.

Garnish with fresh sage leaves. Delicious!

Happy summer!

add a little Dijon mustard, garlic & Worcestershire sauce and you have a classic vinaigrette. Add some lemon & anchovies and it's nearly a Cesar salad dressing.

I love this recipe! Gonna steal it this week to add to my hot weather cooking ideas! Thanks Stacey - you are great!

Gee, if I had only posted this on MY blog! Oh, thats right, I dont have a blog...lol. I have to take credit for being the family member who actually HAD the recipe..the originator had lost it over the years. I love this because it doesnt seem to burn on the chicken like some other BBQ sauces. Glad that this is shared with the world now...

This is a GREAT BBQ sauce. I was a grad student in Poultry Science at the U of Wisconsin 30+ years ago, and the Poultry Products prof made this for all of our departmental picnics. Imagine 50 half chickens on the grill all at once getting mopped with this sauce. He made it by the gallon! I still use it today - you can baste from the minute you put the bird on the grill and keep going, adding layers of flavor. Great work Stacey - I love your site.
