Nutella Cupcakes

Growing up in my house, delicacies like FLUFF and NUTELLA were not allowed.

It didn't matter how much we begged and pleaded, my mother was not giving into the sugar + palm oil as first 2 ingredients list. She liked all natural products like Grape Nuts cereal and processed American cheese slices........
(However, we did wear her down and she allowed TRIX & FROSTED LUCKY CHARMS cereal!).

I saw that forbidden Nutella on sale in my supermarket the other day, and figured, why not? You only live once.

I think Giada DeLaurentis has made this hazelnut spread popular again because I see she uses it in a few of her recipes on Food Network.

The label says "NO artificial colors or preservatives", however, when you read the ingredients, it has artificial "flavor", vanillin being the culprit.

It is not made in Italy as I always dreamed, but in Canada. But it does say "50 hazelnuts for every jar!".
Ok, then I can eat it.

I made this popular blog recipe for Nutella cupcakes.
A simple vanilla cake with nutella swirled in. How easy is that?

It was. Not only was it so easy, but such a treat.
Maybe now I can have that sip of coffee, so it won't stunt my growth!

Nutella Cupcakes: makes 10 cupcakes

10 tbsp butter, softened
3/4 cup white sugar
3 eggs
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 3/4 cups flour
1/4 tsp salt
2 tsp baking powder
Nutella, approx. 1/3 cup

Preheat oven to 325F. Line 10 muffin tins with paper liners.

Cream together butter and sugar until light, 2 minutes. Add in eggs one at a time, until fully incorporated. Add vanilla. Stir in flour, salt and baking powder until combined.

Fill each muffin liner with batter. Fill about 3/4 full.

Top each cake with 1 tsp Nutella.

Swirl Nutella in with a toothpick, making sure to fold a bit of batter up over the nutella.

Bake for 20 minutes.
Remove to a wire rack to cool completely.

People in our families dont' even know what Nutella is, so we can relate to not having it in a way. It is addictive once you try it. We'll have to try swirling it in cupcakes.
I need to stop eating the nutella by the spoonful and give this recipe a whirl - in fact I might try it with the amish starter I have.....great idea thanks!

This is twilight zone, Stace. My son was just asking WHEN I'd make something with the jar of Nutella that I've had in my pantry for months! I've never had it before, but I adore hazelnuts. These do look very simple, and I LOVE those cupcake holders. I have a stack of your recipes in my MUST MAKE pile...here's another one.

I wish I had one of those delicious cupcakes in my hand RIGHT NOW. Who kidding -- I probably couldn't stop at just one. Putting Nutella on my grocery list so that I can make these SOON. Anxiously awaiting a Fluff recipe from SSO!! Because now you can eat the stuff with impunity!

My mom bought all the processed foods and we loved them. You might be too young to remember Space Food Sticks, something the astronauts ate I think. If it was good for astronauts, must be good for us...But she would not fry anything, no fried foods, ever. Bless her heart.
I'm sure my sister-in-law will love these cupcakes, NutellaLover she.
Sweet post Stace.

Thank God we had Fluff in my house - but I didn't discover Nutella until well into adulthood. So who wouldn't swoon over one of these cupcakes?

S,

You poor deprived child! I cannont imagine growing up with out a jar of Nutella in the cupboard. Our after school snack was a slice of bread with Nutella. Back home in PR they even sold it in individual little cups with a mini "paddle" to eat it with. Mmmmmmm so yummy.

I am going to have to try these cupcakes they remind me of my childhood.

Those cupcakes look to-die-for! I love nutella, but hardly ever buy it because I can't resist sticking a spoon in the jar and eating it all!

i never thought to put nutella in cupcakes. What a great idea.
What pretty wrappers! One of my girlfriends had similar ones (but in baby blue) at her wedding, since we did cupcakes instead of a traditional cake.
These are deadly! I have a jar of Nutella on my counter, I walk by and sniff it. It holds me back from sticking a spoon in it! Love the cup cake holders.

I do believe I've gained 10 pounds since visiting your blog. And, I'm a "newbie" I just can't resist. I will now have to buy a jar of Nutella and try these cupcakes. Which by the way is no easy feat for me because I'm allergic to handling flour...I may just have to muddle through:) Thanks Stacey...

P.S. World Nutella Day is February 5 in 2010. I'm saving this link for then to share on my blog.

I had such a great conversation with friend of mine recently about Nutella. We were talking about how the spread is crazy popular overseas but has really only started to become in vogue.

Will definitely try these...I live in Spain, so, the Nutella we get here comes directly from Italy. Once u eat it here u realize that the one made in Canada, or USA, tastes less "hazelnutty".

Stacey help! I'm a huge fan of your amazing blog. I tried these beautiful Nutella cupcakes yesterday and followed your recipe to a t. Batter was so thick and difficult to even get toothpick swirled around in there to blend in the nutella. Right off the bat I was thinking, too much baking powder maybe? Was worried they would be dense & lead like in consistency. They baked up beautifully but I was right, texture was hard & muffin like, not moist or cupcake like at all. Also, 20 min was not nearly enough time to bake these babies, My oven at 325 required an additional 10 min to bake 10 muffins. I kept testing with and batter was still wet. So what did I do wrong? They were still delicious but way too dry. Should I halve the amount of baking powder next time? I took photos, they did look gorgeous! Thank you for this wonderful recipe, Nutella is food of the Gods in this household!
