HOLY CANNOLI

The word cannolo means "little tube" in Italian.
Cannolis are little fried pastry tubes filled with ricotta. Some people use mascarpone, but the traditional Sicilian cannoli recipe that originated in Palermo calls for ricotta cheese.

You can add candied orange peel, chopped pistachios, marsala wine and/or chocolate chips. Personally, I like all of the above in my cannolis!

This is my sister's recipe. She made a bunch and served them for Christmas.
They are made to order! Pipe the filling in right before serving.

They are so simple to make, especially if you are buying the pre made cannoli shells at the Italian bakery. (I have been told that Costco sells the pre made shells too).

Eden's Cannoli Recipe:
makes approx. 30 small cannolis

2 lbs. (32oz) ricotta cheese
3/4 cup confectioners sugar
2 tbsp vanilla
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup MINI chocolate chips
1/2 cup of candied orange peel
30 small cannoli shells

chopped pistachios for garnish (optional)
confectioners sugar for dusting the shells

Mix your ricotta with rest of ingredients. Beat until smooth.
Pipe ricotta mixture into shells. If you don't have a pastry bag, then put your filling in a ziploc freezer bag and twist the bag tight. Cut a hole at one corner of the plastic bag to create a piping bag. I always do it this way, so I don't have to wash my pastry bags!!!

Sprinkle powdered sugar over the shells, and garnish with chopped pistachio meats if you like!
Enjoy!

Gotta love the premade shells. Makes things so much easier.
Didn't I just say I need to detox? Well not if this was in front of me.
My weakness, cannoli's!!!!!!
Oh how I love cannolis. Now I am going to have to go buy some shells to make some. They probably are really good with your homemade candied orange peels.

I miss a good cannoli! They just aren't the same out here. The Italian deli's are so far away from my house. Thanks for this post- I'll be making these!

This has been on my ever-growing list of 'things I must make eventually' for a long time. It's simply one of those things that we splurge on every time we're in the North End of Boston. Love cannoli. Lucky you!

Those look mad good. When I was a kid we would sometimes get some from a little bakery in the North End of Boston. I never knew you could buy pre-made pastry for them, now I have to make some myself.

Oh man I haven't had a cannoli since I lived in San Francisco, yum!
The one item I can never make it through little Italy without giving into. Gelato , pizza - I can resist almost anything except for these little treats. If I made them at home there would be a chance that no one else would have a chance to get one. :)

They look so good. It's making me miss Philadelphia and Termini's cannoli.

Brilliant! I just made Cassata this afternoon - pretty much the same filling, and there was a little ricotta/citron peel/triple sec etc filling left over from the cake... it didn't linger too long in the fridge :-)
